During the past 24 hours or so as the Supremes decided to uphold the ACA (or RomneyCare as we like to call it in the Wire's editorial bullpen) I have been seeing lots of bloody-shirt-waving, pearl-clutching, wailing, weeping and gnashing-o'-teeth variations on "The-End-Of-America-As-We-Know-It!!!!11111Q!34e2ERqrwefaw3"
And yes, the salty tears of infantile rage and political impotence from Tea Party types are the most satisfying of all...
Yet, I would like to validate their opinion. It is the end of American as you know it:
The end of America where 35 to 40 million of your fellow citizens have to choose between healthcare and food.
The end of America where getting sick gets you kicked off your health insurance plan.
The end of America where kids can not stay on their folks insurance longer.
Yeah... that place sucked... good riddance!
Sure ACA has some problems, and makes some debatable assumptions, and those are going to have to be fixed.
But the premise that America is a place where -- in spite of massive wealth -- we still can't seem to get people in to see the doctor, is done.
Let me throw the right a bone here, if you will... If I believed the court had politics on its mind, I would be tempted to say that the Dread Judge Roberts ruled the way he did (Mandate is unconstitutional under Commerce Clause, but we can't overturn it as a tax) essentially wrote the Romney Campaign's biggest -- and to my mind, most successful -- campaign ad.
To wit: Obama administration and Democrats in Congress force massive tax on American people to push them into buying health insurance.
Remember what Roberts actually wrote: Congress has the power to levy taxes, it is not the court's place to rule on the wisdom of that. That is reserved to the people.
If I was politically cynical, I might think Roberts did this on purpose to influence the election... if I was politically cynical...
