What happened in Norway is what can be expected to take place in other parts of Europe. Many Europeans are disgusted with what is happening to their culture by the invasion of Islam. The European melting pot has become a pressure cooker without a safety valve. The same can be said about other places in the world. Islam — either assimilate, or get the hell back to your snake dens whence you slithered out. And by the way, better rewrite your Koran or your teaching will result in grave consequences.

The island of Utoya is owned by the Workers’ Youth League (Arbeidernes ungdomsfylking). These were 16 to 22 year old sons & daughters of COMMUNISTS & SOCIALISTS at a Communist Socialist training camp on the island.

An Impolitic Question...

Given the embarrassing and childish elementary school lunch room free-for-all that has passed for serious budget negotiations, I have a question:

Even after we pass the debt ceiling increase (and we will) has Congress done enough damage to the "full faith and credit" of the U.S. Government that no one will want to lend us money anyway, or at least on some kind of reasonable terms?

Seriously, think about it... if you're a governor on the PRC's or Russia's Central Bank and you were watching this hideous display of grade-school politics regarding something so fundamental, how sanguine would you be about getting out your check book for us?

John Boehner Makes Rare Appearance in Reality Wing of GOP, Finds No One Home

House Speaker John Boehner made a rare appearance in the GOP's ever-shrinking Reality Wing today by announcing that as far as he's concerned, failing to raise the national debt ceiling: "puts us in an awful lot of jeopardy, and puts our economy in jeopardy, risking even more jobs."

Unfortunately, for the Speaker, it turns out that he was addressing no one but a dissolute janitor, who was paying no attention. It turns out the Reality Wing of the GOP has been mostly vacant for some time, and has been mainly converted to storage for boxes of old campaign literature, stacking summer interns and a phone switch for Michelle Bachmann's nascent Presidential campaign.

It's interesting to note that Speaker Boehner's statement comes on the heels of Eric Cantor tossing his (nominal) boss under the bus by his staged temper tantrum and walking out on budget talks. It is generally known that Cantor doesn't have much use for Boehner and would like his job.

By walking out of the talks on the pretense of some sort of hardline fiscal high road against taxes, spending-foo, he doesn't have to be party to the increase in the debt ceiling, which would cost him with his Tea-Party Taliban supporters.

At the same time, he gets to saddle John Boehner with the hated moniker of "deal maker;" the guy who compromised with the President, instead of standing on principle, etc...

Well, in the Pro-Wrestling paradigm that seems to dominate Republican Party politics, this would mean casting Boehner as "the heel." Yet, since he can't avoid it, the Speaker seems like he is going to embrace the roll.

Moreover, it spite of how it might look to the rabid fans of the Gold Standard, it also shows that as we draw closer to August 1, the endgame we all expected is in sight and that no one in Congress (at least no serious people) were willing to be the ones to grab the wheel and drive the bus off the cliff just to prove a point.

How sad is it that something as fundamental as the national debt ceiling has devolved into nothing more than a massive game of political "chicken?"

Of course, instead of making the GOP pay a price for this nonsense, the Obama Adminsitration has been more than willing to roll over on some other very fundamental issues, such as roll backs on Social Security benefits (even though they don't really contribute to the national debt).

Even though Boehner's still talking tough about being "far apart" on an agreement with the White House, you can tell the deal is getting close because Boehner's talking about the need to get the deal done.

In the words of the sage: "Ignore the bones, follow the river..."

From First to Last

I remember being 16 or 17 and getting up at about 4 a.m. with my mom to watch the first shuttle launch on our crappy old CRT air broadcast TV. I also remember, a few days later, watching the shuttle land at Edwards Air Force Base out in the desert.

I just finished watching the final launch of the Space Shuttle on my laptop on a hi-def stream from UStream on the NASA website.

There's something tugging at the back of my mind about What-It-All-Means, but I can't quite grab it. Most of my life has been spent on this weird periphery of the American manned spaceflight program. Newport Beach in the late 60s was largely an aerospace company town in many ways. My father worked for Hughes and later Ford Aerospace and fabricated sheetmetal parts for spacecraft that went to the moon and beyond.

My uncle drove me out to Edwards when the shuttle Enterprise was in flight validation, without engines, gliding off the top of a modified 747 and landing at Edwards, about 18 months before we went to see the first one return from space.

While in the U.S. Coast Guard in 1986, I helped pick up pieces of the shuttle Challenger off the coast of Florida.

And now I have just witnessed the end of an era, possibly the end of manned spaceflight for America. We simply lack the political will to commit to this kind of adventure anymore; and our spirit is poorer for it.

Maybe it's just an age thing, watching the passing of the shuttle as I enter middle age; some sort of weird symbol of getting old and obsolete.

Carl Jung once wrote: "Aging people should know that their lives are not mounting and unfolding but that an inexorable inner process forces the contraction of life."

What does he mean in the context of this post? I haven't a clue, I was just trying to be cool by quoting Jung... But I guess on another reading I guess it's a call for an acceptance of the inevitable. Yet something as seemingly unconnected with aging as watching the last shuttle launch ignites a little rebellion against such an idea.

Really I suppose it all just comes down to asking "what's next?" and hoping that there is some new adventure on the horizon.

Maybe feeling like this is normal? Either way, I shouldn't dwell too much on the mortality aspect. When I started this post, it really was just going to be a reflection on how much has changed in the last 30-some years; how much I have seen and how much I am going to see if I am blessed with another 30-some years.

That's really all I wanted to mull over... from new space shuttles on old crt broadcast TVs to old space shuttles on wifi hi def streams to a laptop: bookends for everything that came in between.

I guess I can figure out what it all means, later... if it really means anything at all...
