So, in an effort to give support to the poor, oppressed company British Petroleum, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce has announced that enough is enough of this bashing of innocent corporations, and says that you – that's right hippy, you – should help BP pick up the dry cleaning check for the Gulf of Mexico.
Everybody is going to contribute to this clean up. We are all going to have to do it. We are going to have to get the money from the government and from the companies and we will figure out a way to do that.
That's Tom Donohue, the head of the U.S. Chamber, saying that. This announcement comes on the same day that some unnamed choad in the home office tells Reuters that in terms of their liability that "at some point a line has to be drawn.".
So, BP is already looking for ways to weasel out of their responsibility... wish I could say that surprised me.
But let's start to look past this for just a moment. You know, now would be a good time to think that perhaps we should start to seriously look at getting past oil. Petroleum has outlived its usefulness and this should be the Come to Jesus moment we need to galvanize support behind a national or international technical and industrial program to get us off the dinosaur juice.
I would like to see a massive Apollo or Manhattan Project-like effort to create green, renewable energy sources, more efficient infrastructure and sustainable urban environments to reduce petroleum consumption in the United States by at least 75 percent by the end of this decade.
Like John Kennedy said, "we choose to do these things not because they are easy, but because they are hard..." and in the end, terribly necessary.
