General Stanley "you're with 'Never-2-B-Printed magazine, right?" McChrystal has been relieved of command as the United States man in charge of our war in Afghanistan and against regional terrorism in general and General David Patraeus has been named has his replacement.
This comes after a very brief meeting in the White House this morning between McChrystal and President Obama to discuss remarks made by the general in the latest edition of Rolling Stone magazine that were critical and indeed contemptuous of the administration and it's handling of the war. The President then met with the head of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and then the announcement was made just before 1:30 EDT.
Frankly, McChrystal is fortunate he's not going to be on the receive end of a Courts Martial for his remarks, per the Uniform Code of Military Justice, 10 U.S.C., Chapter 47, §§800 et seq., prohibitions on officers' public contempt for superiors and civilian leadership.
Per UCMJ Article 88, 10 U.S.C. §888:
Any commissioned officer who uses contemptuous words against the President, the Vice President, Congress, the Secretary of Defense, the Secretary of a military department, the Secretary of Homeland Security, or the Governor or legislature of any State, Commonwealth, or possession in which he is on duty or present shall be punished as a court-martial may direct.
Pretty straightforward. Granted most generals don't get punked by a Courts Martial, but some of the stuff his underlings were saying... well, they don't have a three-star general to cover their asses anymore.
Lawyer up, boys!
